My Pearman Branches

Nan Death was born Florence Emma Pearman on November 25th 1882 at 22, Swanswell Street. She was the eldest daughter of Arthur Pearman and Hannah Maria Suddens. Arthur was born in Gilbert Street, Hillfields, Coventry, and Hannah lived at no.50, Spon Street. Hannah was the granddaughter of a very well respected watchmaker, John Suddens, who worked originally for Howlett Carr and Vale, and eventually, Mr Rotherham. He was still on their payroll at his death on December 28 1882. When Arthur and Hannah married on June 23rd 1878, at Holy Trinity Church, Coventry, they were both 21 years old. Arthur was a watchmaker and Hannah was a silk worker. I have been fortunate with my research of my Pearmans over the last two and a half years, as they have been very easy to research, having a wealth of information in the Coventry records archives, and also the family has been in the Midlands since the 1600's. I have also had a lot of help from Pearmans around the world, who also stem from the same roots as myself. After a few false starts, I now have a direct link to my 10 x great Grandfather, Hugh Pearman,(spelt Permon) who married Mary Penne in Hagley , Worcester on January 16th 1563.    Hugh, was born in 1536. His Father, John was born in about 1514. John and his wife had at least 6 children, Hugh being the third one. Hugh and Mary's youngest son, John had at least one son, Rychard who married Cicely and between them produced eight children, all born in Clent, Staffordshire(at that time). The youngest of these was Thomas, who married Mary Cooks.  They had thirteen children between them and their eleventh son Samuel  married Elizabeth Tomlin from Worcester, on July 17th 1717, at Kingswinford, Staffordshire. Samuel and Elizabeth moved from Clent, to lease Mercote Hall, a farm in Berkswell, Warwickshire. His landlord was a John Mathew, who died in 1741, and left the property to his two maiden nieces, who subsequently married and sold the property to Sir John Eardley Wilmot the Lord of the Manor of Berkswell in 1776. Mercote Hall was in the hands of the Pearmans for more than 100 years. Fortunately for me, a book was published by the 'Offshoot Group', members of Berkswell Local History research group. (Berkswell Miscellanies vol. lV) I was able to glean a great amount of information from this book and from a visit I made to the Berkswell Museum in 2001. Dee Tracy, the curator of the Museum, was an enormous help. Samuel and Elizabeth had at least four children, William, Samuel, Thomas and Jane. When Samuel died in 1761, after living at Mercote for 27 years, his son William took over the lease. William married Sarah Burton of Arley on June 24th 1762. She was 22 years old when they married and William was 28.  They had 10 children. We concentrate on the third son, Thomas. He married Sarah Biddle, and here we break the tie to Mercote Hall, as when William died in 1792, the lease passed on to his son Josiah, and eventually to his son Luke. Samuel's youngest son, also a farmer, married Anna Maria Palmer of Blind Hall. She had about 12 children, but died in 1777 after producing twins.  One of the twins died as well.

On the left is Mercote Hall, Berkswell, leased by Samuel Pearman in the 1700's and his son, William.

Right is Blind Hall, Berkswell, left to Hannah Maria Palmer, who married Samuel's son, another Samuel.

Thomas was baptised on December 29 1765, in Arley, Warwickshire. When he and Sarah married on November 1 1787, it was in Holy Trinity Church. He had been enrolled as an apprentice carpenter to one Joseph Ford on December 30th 1785, and it appears that he had moved to Coventry by then. Thomas married, Sarah Biddle a union that was to produce 10 more children, and it was from this prolific stem that branched the Australian and the American lines, via the eldest son, William, who married Ann Taylor in Coughton, Warwickshire on January 6th 1780 . The fourth son, Josiah, was baptised on January 9th 1795 in Coventry. He was apprenticed to a Thomas Hall as an apprentice watchmaker on 10th June 1808 at the age of 13. He married 20 year old Jane Yates Fletcher on July 26th 1819 at Holy Trinity Church, and they had two sons, John and James. James was born on May 7th 1827 and was my Great, Great,Grandfather. He was apprenticed to a Charles Lucas as a coach-maker, but by the time he was married, he became a ribbon weaver, as was his wife, Mary (nee Clarke), who’s Uncle and father were builders. She was left a substantial amount of property when her father and uncle died. They married on August 4th 1845 at St. John's church, in Fleet Street, Coventry. By the time of the 1851 census, they had one child, Emma, and were living in Shakespeare yard in Spon Street. Sometime after this, they moved to 32, Gilbert Street and had James, Arthur and Ada. Arthur, my Great Grandfather, was born at 32, Gilbert Street in 1857. Although he was a watchmaker by trade, by the late 1800's, he is listed as being a porter in the poll books. This was probably due to the slump in the watchmaking industry by this time. Arthur and Hannah lived at no. 4, Barnes buildings, Holyhead Road, an address that was later changed to 19, Holyhead Road. The house is still there, having been made a listed building, and bought by Touchstone Housing in the late 1980's and converted into flats. Here, they brought up their six children, James, Florence Emma, (Nan),Leonard George, Lillian Ethel , Caroline Elizabeth  and Amy  . They also had three other children who died in infancy. Arthur Ernest, (b. December 29 1880), Edith Ellen (September19 1885) and Alice May (October 23 1886)Great Uncle Len never married and lived with Nan until his death in April 1958 from a brain hemorrhage. He was also found to have cancer. He was buried, as are the other deceased of that side of the family at London Road cemetery. He was a very crabby man, who adored me and he used to always bring boiled sweets back with him for me whenever he went out to the pub (which was every day!), luckily for my teeth I wasn't there every day! He liked his woodbines as well as his drink. He was a member of the West End club, and also the British Legion, as the rest of my elders were. Uncle Len served in World War 1 and fortunately came home unscathed.  He served in the Civil Defence during World War 11.

When the River Sherbourne burst it's banks on December31st. 1900, Nan still lived with her family in Holyhead Rd. They had to move up to the attic because the water was up so high. They watched the water running past their bedroom window like a river down the Holyhead Road.

My Nan was the oldest of the four girls. I don’t know much about James, her older brother but I understand from Amy’s daughter, Molly, that there was some kind of family dispute many years ago, and his name was never mentioned. Her sister, Lillian came next. She married a man named Bill Hatton and they had two sons, Bill and Don. They lived in Northumberland Road, Coventry, and later, moved to 2, Stevenson Road, Keresley.

Great Aunt Cal married before W.W.1, and they had a daughter, Hilda. They lived in Birmingham in a back to back house, in Clarke Street, Ladywood, before her husband went off to war, and got himself killed. After the war, she met and married another man and had a little boy, but such was the attitude of the time, that she was shunned for being a war widow, and remarrying, as it wasn't reckoned to be a patriotic thing to do. She moved with her new family to Adelaide, South Australia, and kept my Nan in food parcels every Christmas throughout W.W.2. Her daughter, Hilda came to visit my Mum in the 1970's, while she was holidaying with a friend, but said that her Mother was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and was now in a home. Hilda had a son, Robert.

Great Aunt Amy was the youngest daughter, who was born on January 6th 1896. She met William Arthur Lane, (Bill), when he was on leave from the Royal Navy, during W.W.1., and after serving at the Battle of Jutland, and in Russia, during the revolution. Their marriage took place at Portsmouth, where Bill was based. A friend who served on the Royal Yacht 'Victoria and Albert', Pa Stubbs, gave them away. After the wedding, sailors pulled them through the streets on a gun carriage back to Ma and Pa Stubbs, who arranged a wedding reception for them. Until Bill was discharged from the Navy, Amy went to live with her sister Cal, in Birmingham. In 1919, and their first child, Ada Mary was born. Thereafter, known as Molly.

A son, Billy was born in 1922 and in 1924, when Aunt Amy was pregnant again, they rented a house, where Peggy was born. Bill senior had left the Navy by now. He got a job at Courtaulds in Coventry, and cycled to work every day until they moved to Ansty in 1935. Betty was born in 1926 and Bert in 1928. The youngest and last child, Brenda Mary was born in 1934. I remember visiting them during the war, and sitting on the side of the canal. They lived in a semi-detached cottage. Soon after that, Amy had a little boy, John, who was still-born. Molly was very ill at the beginning of the war, and spent a lot of time in hospital. She was bitten on her arm by a gnat in September 1940, and an abscess formed. A doctor lanced it, but wasn't very hygienic, and she developed a pelvic abscess, and was in hospital during the blitz, and for almost a year afterwards, having several operations. I was fortunate enough to meet Molly last year (2003), when I was invited to have tea with Betty's daughter, Gillian. Betty, Molly and Brenda were also invited, and Molly kindly let me have a book that she had written of her memoirs. Listening to them, and reading her story, enabled me to fill a lot of gaps that were missing. Especially about Peggy and Brenda, the two that I got to know well. Brenda was just a little older than me. In late 1943, Peggy, who was working in the Airfield Training shop, and was engaged to be married to Cecil, a medical orderly who was in the R.A.F., became ill. She had contracted T.B. and was in the rapid final stages. Cecil insisted on getting married to her, and he bought a large house at 31, Coundon Road, where the whole family moved to so that they could look after her. This is the time when I got to know them well, as Mum and I used to visit often. I got to be good friends with Brenda, and she taught me to tinkle on the piano. A little after this, I seem to remember that Uncle Bill acquired a pianola. I had never seen one before, and I thought that it was magic the way it played and the keys would go up and down with no one playing them!

Peggy and Cecil were married on a wet September 3rd 1944. All the family were there at St. John's church and Aunt Amy did the reception at Coundon Road. Peggy and Cecil went away for their honeymoon, and it rained heavily for most of the fortnight. Peggy got pleurisy and was bedridden when they came home. Mum and I visited her after we'd been to a display of the Russian Cossacks at Coundon Road rugby ground in the October. I remember it well, because when I got home that night, we discovered that I had developed chicken pox.Soon after this, Aunt Amy developed T.B. as well. On December 15th, Peggy passed away. She was 20 years old and had been married for four months. She was buried at London Road Cemetery in her wedding dress. Aunt Amy died the following June  After that, we lost touch for years, although I did hear that Brenda had become a nun. Whenwe met again last year, we have kept in touch by letter and hopefully some time soon, I will visit her at the convent where she lives and looks after the garden at The Covent of the Holy Name in Derbyshire.

A sequel to this narrative about my Pearmans, occurred yesterday, June 16th 2008.  I found my long lost Great Uncle James Herbert!  His Grand-daughter e-mailed me via Genes re-connected and gave me information that I never thought I would find and she lives in Coventry.  She gave me her telephone number, and I will be ringing her later today.  As the saying goes----watch this space!

The following notes are PDF records that a contact of mine kindly sent to me.  They are records of the early Pearman's (Permon's) and are extremely interesting, so I am including them on this page :-

Hugh Perman (c1536 – c1600), possibly born in the parish of Pedmore (LDS/MS)

Mary Penn born c1538, survived her husband and executrix of his Will

From 1564 to 1573, the Pearman family lived in the parish of Alvechurch,

Worcestershire, where all the children were baptised. At some time between 1573

and 1586 (when daughter Jane was married) the family moved to Clent. It was here

that Hugh died in early 1599.

Baptismal records and beneficiaries of Hugh Pearman’s will enable the present

reconstruction of the family. Anthony is not mentioned in the will, so probably died in

childhood. One of his daughters, either Elizabeth or Ann, married John Jones, but it

is not clear which. His wife, Mary, was the executrix of Hugh’s Will.

An inventory of his goods made on 16 June 1599 valued them at £63 10s, and its contents

suggest Hugh was principally a sheep farmer. The livestock included 40 sheep, 10 lambs, 4

pigs, 2 mares and a cow.

Antonye Perman baptised on 2 Nov 1567 at Alvechurch, Worcs

It is this Richard Perman (or Pearman) (bap 21 Oct 1600 - bur 23 Feb 1674) who is

believed to have married Cicely and had eight children: Richard, John, Anne,

Ambrose, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Joane and Thomas.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes

1. Jo Vernon suggests that the parents of Richard Pearman (c1600-1675) were Rychard

Perman and Ann Baylies (married 24 Nov 1594 in Alvechurch, Worcester). Two points argue

against this. First, there is no record of a Richard born to Rychard and Ann. Second, the three

recorded baptisms of their children (from 1595 to 1606) took place in Alvechurch (when the

family of Hugh Perman were already living in Clent). It is, of course, possible that Richard

Pearman’s family also moved to Clent and also had a son, Richard, in about 1608. But as

Richard Pearman married Cicely in about 1628, it is more likely he was born in about 1600 –

corresponding to the age of Richard, son of John Pearman and grandson of Hugh.

3. The records suggest four possibly related Pearman families living in north Worcestershire

in the mid to late-sixteenth century.

a) John Perman (bur 22 May 1558) father of Bennet. Bennet married John Newey in 1571.

b) Thomas Perman (who also died in 1558) in Upton Warren, with a son Humphory

c) Thomas Perman of Alvechurch married Margaret Kightley in 1566, and whose recorded

children were Joane, Jane and Rychard. It is likely that it was his son, Rychard, who married

Ann Baylies in 1594 and the couple had three children in Alvechurch (Thomas, Robert and

John) between 1595 and 1606.

d) Hugh Perman married Mary Penne and had seven children. The family moved from

Alvechurch to Clent between 1573 and 1586. Hugh was succeeded by two sons, Nicholas

and John, and it appears that it was John’s son, Richard, who married Cicely and farmed at

Hollow (now Holly) Cross in Clent in the seventeenth century.

In 1599, at the time of Hugh Perman’s death, his son Nicholas had only one son, Thomas. It

is possible that between 1599 and 1607 he had another son, Richard, and it is this Richard

(rather than John’s son) who married Cicely. No records have been found yet to support this

lineage.

4. The [Clent Parish] registers previous to 1813 are as follows: (i) all entries 1562 to 1619,

also for year 1626; (ii) baptisms 1637 to 1642, marriages and burials 1637 to 1641, also all

5. CLENT

Clent is a hilly parish containing besides the village of Clent the hamlets of Upper Clent,

where is situated the church, Lower Clent, Adam's Hill, Holy Cross and Rumbold, divided from

the rest of the parish by Walton Hills, of which Holy Cross is the most populous. Although

surveyed in Worcestershire in Domesday Book the parish was soon afterwards annexed to

Staffordshire, evidently owing to the fact that it paid the farm it rendered to the king, through

the manor of Kingswinford in that county. It remained part of Staffordshire until 1832, when it

was again annexed to Worcestershire for Parliamentary purposes. In 1844 it became part of

Worcestershire for all purposes. The soil is gravel, marl and clay and the subsoil clay and

stone. Agriculture is the only industry; the chief crops being wheat, oats and potatoes, which

latter have largely supplanted the barley which used to be grown. In the 16th and 17th

centuries the chief trade was scythe-making, which was followed by nail-making, and this in

its turn died out late in the 19th century. The parish covers an area of 2,424 acres, which

includes 755½ acres of arable land, 911½ of grass land, 81 acres of woods and plantations

and 7 acres covered by water, the last being made up by several ponds, two of which work

mills.

Pearman, Nicholas, Clent, Will proved 13 June 1724 (Index to Wills, Worcs CRO)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nicholas Pearman was named as executor of his father’s will. However, the date of

the marriage between Nicholas and Sara (when this Nicholas would have been 40)

and the fact that Thomas inherited the lease of Hollow Cross Farm (implying that he

was the oldest son) suggest that this Nicholas may have died in childhood and

another unrecorded son named Nicholas was born after Thomas in c1647. The will of

Nicholas Pearman might clarify this.

Nicholas married twice:
